Letter #4 - The Partner Who Walks Beside Me
A letter to the person who continues to choose this journey with me.
When people talk about life's difficult seasons, they often talk about courage.
But rarely do we talk about the quiet courage of the person standing beside you.
My husband, Neil, and I have walked through many seasons of life together. Like any couple, we have faced our share of challenges — some expected, and some that arrived without warning. This journey with kidney disease is just one more season we are navigating together.
What I have come to appreciate even more deeply during this time is that our relationship is not about perfection. It's about showing up.
There are days when one of us is stronger than the other. Days when one of us carries a little more of the weight. But somehow we find our balance by continuing to support each other and by continuing to choose each other.
And that choice matters.
Illness has a way of testing the foundations of a relationship. It introduces uncertainty, new responsibilities, and moments that can feel overwhelming.
But it also reveals something beautiful — the strength that grows when two people decide to face life together.
Neil has had his own difficult seasons to navigate, challenges that would test anyone. Yet even while carrying his own burdens, he continues to show up with patience and love. And trust me, there have been plenty of moments when I've tested that patience.
His willingness to stand beside me through this journey reminds me that partnership is about choosing to walk through life together, whatever it brings.
We listen.
We support.
We keep choosing each other.
That commitment has become one of the greatest sources of strength in my life right now.
Because when you are preparing for a transplant, you realize how much of the journey is shared.
Appointments are shared.
Worries are shared.
Hope is shared.
And so is the determination to keep moving forward.
Every day I am reminded that this path is not one I am walking alone.
In a season filled with unknowns, one thing has remained clear: we keep showing up, we keep supporting one another, and we keep choosing each other.
Neil, thank you for walking beside me through all of it.
I love you.
With Love,
Missy
